Dr. Al-Azzawi has over 35 years of expertise as a physician and academic professional. His experience has ranged from a general practitioner to a vice dean of a medical school. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Basrah - College of Medicine in 1986 and received his board certification in fractures and orthopedic surgery from the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations in 1994. He served as a faculty member at the University of Diyalah – College of Medicine, American University of Healing Arts, and University of Arkansas – Pulaski Technical College. Dr. Al-Azzawi joined Sullivan University as an adjunct instructor in 2018.
