Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Betz attended Temple University School of Pharmacy where he received his Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2000. Following graduation he completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center and later practiced as a clinical pharmacist at both Norton and Kosair Children’s Hospitals. In 2002 he moved to New Orleans where he practiced as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Ochsner Medical Center and taught at Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) College of Pharmacy for 6 years and the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) College of Pharmacy from 2008 to 2009. Dr. Betz joined Sullivan as an Associate Professor of Clinical and Administrative Sciences in August of 2009 and practices in Internal Medicine at Norton Audubon Hospital.
Aside from patient care, a large portion of Dr. Betz’s practice has been dedicated to the education of new practitioners and service to his profession. His internal medicine lectures have involved multiple topics with a focus in heart failure and diabetes management, while his University lectures have been focused on applied pharmacokinetics and heart failure therapeutics. In addition, he has played an active role in both the Louisiana Society of Health System Pharmacists (LSHP) and the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). Dr. Betz joined LSHP in 2003, became Southeast Chapter President in 2004, and LSHP President in 2006. He also chaired several committees. In 2009 Dr. Betz served as an ASHP Delegate to the House of Delegates and on the Council of Pharmacy Practice.
Dr. Betz has also had the fortune of being recognized by his colleagues and students. Some of his accolades include: Clinical Preceptor of the Year from the XULA Class of 2004, Pharmacist of the year from SELSHP, ASHP Executive Vice President’s Award for Courageous Service at Ochsner Clinic Foundation during Hurricane Katrina, ASHP President’s Award for service to LSHP, and the Certificate of Excellence in Teaching from the ULM class of 2010. He was also given the honor of being the Keynote Speaker for the 2006 Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates’ White Coat Ceremony at XULA. At Sullivan Dr. Betz hopes to continue his local and national service, expand the practice opportunities for pharmacy clinicians in Kentucky, and educate/mentor the next generation of patient focused pharmacy practitioners.
