DEAN OF CONFLICT MANAGEMENT | PROFESSOR
Dr. LaVena Wilkin is the Director of the PhD program at Sullivan University. Before accepting that position, she served for five years and the Dean of Conflict Management programs at Sullivan. She has been with Sullivan since 1999 when she became an adjunct instructor for the College of Business. Before joining Sullivan University, Dr. Wilkin spent twenty-six years in the construction industry, and three of those years she co-owned a masonry sub-contracting company, with sales in excess of $2 million annually. After selling the construction company in 2001, Dr. Wilkin came to work full-time at Sullivan serving as the Associate Director of the Evening and Weekend Division. She was also the Dean of the College of Business for Sullivan University for three years.
Dr. Wilkin has facilitated workshops on communication, conflict, and change for Ford Motor Company, the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice, ZirMed, TMP Computer Systems, Altuglass, The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, The Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accounts, Sullivan University's College of Pharmacy, the American Red Cross, the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (an Irish labor union), the North American Council for Staff, Program, and Organizational Development, and the American Society for Industrial Security.
Dr. Wilkin has also presented papers on workplace bullying for the Southern Industrial Relations and Human Resources Conference and for Sullivan University. Recently she facilitated a workshop on forgiveness for Unity Church of Middletown. A paper she co-wrote on workplace bullying was presented at The Psychology Research Unit of the Athens, Greece Institute for Education and Research. She is also published in the International Journal of Business and Social Science and writes a quarterly column for Business First. Dr. Wilkin is also co-editor of a book entitled Organizational Conflicts: Challenges and Solutions. Finally, she is the Editor for the Journal of Conflict Management, a scholarly journal that publishes research in many of the multidisciplinary areas of managing conflicts.
Dr. Wilkin earned her associate, bachelors, and master's degrees from Sullivan, where she was a member of the charter MBA class. Dr. Wilkin earned her PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Her dissertation topic was workplace bullying in academe. In addition to workplace bullying, her conflict-related research interests include forgiveness, communication, emotional intelligence, facilitation, organizational conflict, conflict and change, and interpersonal conflict management.
Dr. Wilkin is the Treasurer for the Leadership Council at Unity Church of Middletown. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for the Prevention and Aggression Among Adolescence (SPAVA). She is currently working with the Director of Safe Neighborhoods through the Office of Mayor Greg Fisher on initiatives to reduce violence in Louisville.
