Dr. Anne Nelson was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, US, but grew up in the states of Virginia and North Carolina. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a doctorate in Business Management with concentration in Information Systems. She has completed post-doctoral work in telecommunications and electronic commerce at Stanford University. Dr. Nelson is Microsoft certified, is a Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW), and is a graduate of the Executives Institute of the Kenan-Flagler School of Business, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to teaching here, Dr. Nelson has been a Professor at École Superieure de Commerce - Pau, France, where she taught in their global MBA partnerships with National School of Business (NSB) Graduate School of Business in Bangalore, India and Stockholm University School of Business in Stockholm, Sweden. Since the 1990s, until recently, she lived in France about 3-4 months out of each year.
Nelson is also a retired managing partner with NMA, Inc., an international consulting firm specializing in executive learning platforms and collaborative technologies and continues to consult for them from time to time. She has been invited to present her research around the globe; the research centers on the global aspects of communication, information systems, knowledge management, and organizational structure. Recently she has been interested in the topic of solastalgia as it relates to cloud employees. In addition to her research, Dr. Nelson has written numerous technology and business titles. Her book, co authored with her husband, titled Building Electronic Commerce (ISBN: 020174130X ) was published by Prentice Hall/Addison Wesley and translated into Korean (ISBN: ISBN 89-90109-04-3). Recently, she was invited to contribute a chapter in Cross Cultural Management and Negotiation Practices (ISBN-13: 978-0977421121) published by ILEAD Academy.
Prior to academia, Nelson was General Manager with Park Communications (headquartered in New York), then the fifth largest media conglomerate in the U.S., where she managed several of their newspapers in the southeast. She has also been co-owner of a newspaper in western North Carolina for 9 years. It was sold to media conglomerate Mid-South Management Group in 1999, who sold all their newspaper holdings to Heartland Publications in 2007.
Nelson has been President of the Board of Trustees of a community hospital and the President of the local Chamber of Commerce. She has also been a past member of a community bank Board of Directors and past President of the local chapter of Rotary. Currently, she is on the Board of Adivsors for the National School of Business in Bangalore, India, on the Board of Directors of Intersect Foundation, on the Board of Directors of the Forsyth Humane Society, and a member of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM).
