Dr. Gary S. Metcalf, Ph.D

INSTRUCTOR

Gary S. Metcalf, Ph.D., earned his BS in Education from North Texas State University in 1981 and graduated with a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1985. A strong advocate of lifelong learning, he completed his PhD in Human Science (focused on Organizational Systems) from Saybrook University in 2000.

Before transitioning to academic and consulting work, Gary served as Manager, Employee Assistance and Health Promotion programs for Ashland Inc. and Manager of Employee Assistance Programs, Tandy Corporation (Radio Shack). In those roles, he provided coaching, counseling, and training to both managers and employees in an effort to create positive systemic change at both the individual and organizational levels. Since 2001 he has taught with numerous online universities, and currently holds part-time positions at Saybrook University, in the Organizational Systems concentration, as well as Sullivan University, with the Ph.D. in Management.

He has authored numerous articles and presentations, and co-authored The Management of People in Mergers & Acquisitions (Quorum Books, 2001) with Dr. Teresa A. Daniel. He is also active in a number of professional organizations, currently serving as President of the International Federation for Systems Research based in Vienna, Austria. He was President of the International Society for the Systems Sciences for the 2007-2008 term. Recently, he has been involved with international colleagues in research about the emerging field of service science.

In addition to his work in academia, Gary is President of Interconnections, LLC (www.interconnectionsllc.com). Through the delivery of workshops, strategic training and coaching, the firm supports businesses in their efforts to solve complex organizational problems using a systems-based approach.　 Representative clients include: IKEA; Dow Chemical Corporation; Amazon.com; SINOPEC (China); Englishbooster (France); and King's Daughters Medical Center.

Gary is married to Dr. Teresa A. Daniel, a colleague and Dean of Sullivan's Human Resource Leadership Program. When he is not traveling, hiking, or cross-country skiing (strong family passions shared with his spouse and two sons), he lives, works, and plays in both Louisville and Ashland, KY.
