A true nanny is more than a babysitter. Nannies are expected to participate in the social, emotional and intellectual development of their charges, and will work with the child(ren) on such areas as language development, school readiness skills, toilet learning, social manners and much more. You do not simply play all day; you use play to extend the child’s learning by creating a safe, positive learning environment individualized to the meet the child’s needs. The children’s day will not simply consist of random activities. Nannies are trained to provide a carefully planned program of activities that help children to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively.

Maintaining current knowledge on health issues with regard to common childhood conditions, such as asthma, food allergies, learning differences, diabetes, etc., is really mandatory. Skills in music, art, drama, the latest technology and storytelling are also helpful. Professional nannies must have business sense and management abilities as well.

“I was drawn to [Sullivan’s] program because there was so much hands-on learning. It made me excited about attending the program before I had even enrolled. I loved being able to work with kids in different environments. We were able to do in home, in school, and in daycare externships.

I have been a nanny on and off since I graduated in 2004 and having a degree definitely sets you apart from others applying for the same position. I was also able to earn a position as an assistant director at an ECE center because I had a degree! The one thing that I have knowledge of that some people don’t is NAEYC. We are taught the requirements for NAEYC certification in school and that is a plus when applying for a position with a center that has that certification.”
